CEL OPENS NEW EXHIBIT ON URBAN REDEVELOPMENT THE REGIONAL ARTS COMMISSION BUILDING BY KIKU OBATA AND COMPANY FEATURED

December 11, 2013 St. Louis MO. Creative Exchange Lab/The Center for Architecture and Design Saint Louis (CEL) will open the next exhibition in the new series “CONTEXT\CONTRAST: PART2 ST. LOUIS” at its Locust St. location on December 17, from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. CEL will welcome Dennis Hyland, AIA NCARB, Project Architect at Kiku Obata and Company, for a lecture and discussion on the nature of in-fill architecture and urban redevelopment in St. Louis, with the RAC as the reference point.
The Regional Arts Commission building was the keystone of a planned renewal of the east end of the Delmar Loop near Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Within six years, eight new or renovated buildings were !nished, gaining historic tax credits and protecting much original architecture.
The Kiku Obata group designed the street’s anchor businesses including the Regional Arts Commission’s new office building. The American Planning Association said of this project that “…this is not a cloned street, but a vibrant place with a character all its own. As the Loop community grows physically and economically, it seeks to attract businesses that complement and build on the street’s unique identity, continuing its prosperity and vitality.”
This exhibition is a continuation of the dialogue begun with “Context/Contrast : New Architecture in Historic Districts 1967-2009,” recently on view at CEL and developed by AIA New York and The Center for Architecture, that explored a selection of new commercial and residential projects and how they relate to the surrounding architecture and historically significant communities in which they are located, and will be on view from December 17, 2013 through March 28, 2014.
CEL is a nonpro!t 501(c)3 organization that promotes architecture, design, art and technology. With an emphasis on public interest projects, CEL promotes diversity and green enterprise, while also promoting creative endeavors that support its members, educates the public, and aids in community and economic development.
