Segregation by Design

Catalina Freixas, WashU
Mark Abbott, HSSU
Exhibit opening & reception

The exhibit, Segregation by Design, is the result of a novel interdisciplinary and inter-university seminar intended to encourage research on segregation. In order to strengthen the curriculum for the seminar our team held a series of gatherings that focused on the issue of segregation, bringing together scholars from regional institutions, members of nonprofit organizations and government agencies. These conversations were recorded and later curated as a collection on American Apartheid. These efforts have resulted in the current exhibit, Segregation by Design: Conversations and Calls for Action in St. Louis.
Segregation by Design explores the question of whether the ultimate goal should be integration, inclusiveness or equity. It attempts to elucidate these questions from a historical perspective, while at the same time considering the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability. It is intended to serve as a call for action, a resource for current and future leaders in the work of remedying disparities in our cities, and a vital tool for achieving sustainable urbanism.
The course Segregation by Design is supported by The Divided City: An Urban Humanities Initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation. The gatherings Freixas and Abbott hosted were funded through the Office of the Provost’s Bring Your Own Idea program. The book is funded by the WashU Ferguson Academic Seed Fund through the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost and WashU Libraries, as well as a Sam Fox School Creative Activity Research Grant.
